There are, however, a number of things which set certain scarves and shawls apart.  The fabric, for example, can make the world of difference in terms of whether the accessory can be made to look smart or casual and this will, of course, determine how usable and how versatile it is.  Wool, cotton or manmade fabrics, for instance, will only ever look casual, whereas soft, silky pashmina works perfectly for every occasion.

Another thing which makes an enormous difference to the look of a scarf or shawl is whether or not it has a fringe.  Now, it might be hard to imagine that a simple fringe could make a women’s scarf or shawl stand out from those without, but actually the effect that it creates can add elegance to an already elegant look, or make a casual look even more so.

To use the first example, a women’s scarf or shawl made of certain materials can sometimes look unfinished, especially if it is being worn with an elegant evening gown or a cocktail dress, whereas a sumptuous pashmina scarf or shawl with a fringe has that extra detail which makes it look complete.  Because the fringe looks entirely different to the rest of the piece, it also adds additional interest which a fringeless scarf or shawl does not have.
